Notes Studio Help Center:
Frequently Asked Questions
Our quality standards apply also in terms of service, technical expertise and advice.
Getting Started & Enrollment
What is the best age to start music lessons for my child?
While every child is different, we typically recommend starting Piano or Violin at age 5, and Guitar or Drums at age 7. For younger children (ages 3–4), our senior faculty focuses on rhythm and ear training to prepare them for formal instrumental study. Check out our special program Young Talent Star to find out more.
Do we need to own an instrument before our first trial lesson?
Not at all! We provide all instruments during your trial session. If you decide to enroll, our teachers will provide technical advice on purchasing or renting the right instrument to ensure you get the best quality within your budget.
What happens during a trial lesson?
The trial is a 30-minute session where our senior faculty assesses the student’s natural rhythm, coordination, and interest level. It’s a chance for you to see our teaching style in action and for us to recommend the best musical path forward.
Do you offer lessons for children with special needs?
Absolutely. We believe music is for everyone. Our selected instructors are trained to work with children with a range of special needs, tailoring lessons to each child’s abilities. Speak to us for more details.
How are recitals and performances conducted, and are they mandatory?
We host regular recitals to showcase students’ progress. While recitals are highly encouraged for the developmental benefits they provide, they are not mandatory.
Instruments & Practice
Is it okay to start piano on a digital keyboard instead of an acoustic piano?
Yes, a weighted, 88-key digital piano is a great starting point for beginners. As a student progresses toward Grade 3 and above, we will advise you on transitioning to an acoustic piano to master the necessary touch and tonal expression.
How can I help my child practice if I have no musical background?
You don’t need to be a musician to help! We provide clear practice logs and simplified goals for each week. Your main role is to help your child establish a consistent 15-minute daily routine and offer encouragement.
How long does it typically take to see progress?
Progress can vary widely depending on the student’s age, practice habits, and the instrument. Generally, with consistent practice, students can start to see progress within a few weeks.
Do I need a full drum kit at home to start drum lessons?
Initially, a practice pad and a pair of sticks are enough to learn basic rudiments. As your child commits to the instrument, we can advise you on space-saving electronic drum kits or traditional acoustic sets.
Do you offer lessons for children with special needs?
Absolutely. We believe music is for everyone. Our selected instructors are trained to work with children with a range of special needs, tailoring lessons to each child’s abilities. Speak to us for more details.
Methodology & Exams
What is the difference between Classical and Pop music exams?
Classical exams (like ABRSM) focus on traditional technique and standard repertoire. Pop & Rock exams focus on contemporary skills, including improvisation and performing modern hits with backing tracks.
Which exam boards do you support for different preferences?
We offer a wide range of paths to suit every student’s goal. For classical rigor, we use ABRSM. For a mix of styles, we offer Trinity College London. For modern genres, we specialize in Rockschool (RSL) and Trinity Rock & Pop.
Does the school focus more on exams or on performing?
We strive to develop all-rounded musicians. Our methodology ensures students excel in established international exams to secure the credentials needed for school and university credits, while simultaneously training them to be confident performers. This dual approach ensures they have the “paperwork” for their portfolio and the “talent” for the stage.

Continuous Progress Monitoring: Our faculty documents progress regularly, providing parents with feedback to ensure every student reaches their musical milestones.
Will my child have the opportunity to perform on a real stage?
Absolutely. We believe that music is meant to be shared. We provide regular stage performance opportunities, ranging from intimate studio recitals to major annual concerts in professional venues. These events are designed to build stage presence, boost self-esteem, and give students a tangible goal to work toward beyond their weekly lessons.
Who are the teachers at Notes Studio?
Our students are trained by seasoned, well-known performers who are active in the music industry. Learning from a “working musician” means your child isn’t just learning notes from a book; they are gaining insights from mentors who understand the pressure of the spotlight and the technical nuances of professional-level artistry.
Global Recognition & University Preparation
What is the community like at Notes Studio?
Our school is a vibrant gathering point for both international and local students. We take pride in being a melting pot of cultures, where students from different backgrounds bond over a shared love for music. This diverse environment enriches your child’s social perspective, making their musical journey a global experience right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
Are the certificates from your exam boards recognized for university applications?
Yes, absolutely. We prepare students for exams from established boards like ABRSM, Trinity College London, and Rockschool (RSL). These certificates are globally recognized and carry UCAS tariff points (for UK universities) and are highly regarded by admissions officers in the US and Australia. Having a Grade 6-8 certificate on a resume demonstrates long-term commitment, discipline, and high-level cognitive skills that help students stand out in competitive university applications.
How does music education help my child’s future career, even if they don't become a professional musician?
Music is a “power skill” for the future. Through our trained techniques, students develop emotional intelligence, public speaking confidence, and complex problem-solving abilities. Universities and future employers value music students because they have proven they can master a difficult craft through thousands of hours of practice—a trait that translates to success in medicine, law, engineering, and business.
